
Market on Thursday: Sensex, Nifty closed flat amid fluctuations
Indian equity indices started 2026 on a positive note. There was growth in all sectors except FMCG and Pharma. However, the initial gains were wiped out due to profit booking in the afternoon and the market closed flat. At the end of the trading session, Sensex closed 32 points or 0.04 per cent lower at 85,188.60 and Nifty closed 16.95 points or 0.06 per cent higher at 26,146.55. The BSE Midcap index rose 0.3 percent, while the Smallcap index closed flat.
The market traded in a small range in yesterday’s session. Opened higher and reached near 26,200 level, but could not hold on to the upper levels. In the end it closed flat. The biggest rising stocks of Nifty included Eternal, NTPC, Bajaj Auto, Shriram Finance, Wipro. While the falling stocks included ITC, Bajaj Finance, Dr Reddy’s Labs, ONGC, Tata Consumer.
On the sectoral front, the FMCG index declined 3 per cent, and the pharma index was down 0.4 per cent, while Auto, IT, Metal, Power, Telecom, PSU Bank were up 0.4-1.5 per cent.
